Skerries RNLI were tasked c. 18.00 on 19/02/2013 to reports of a powerboat in difficulty off Balbriggan having fouled its propeller, resulting in gearbox damage. The position was given as just off Hampton Cove, Balbriggan. The GardaĆ had been notified and they called the out the RNLI. Skerries Lifeboat Volunteer crew put to sea and the Coastguard Helicopter R116, which had been on exercise locally, headed for the co-ordinates provided.

Temperatures were quite low and the light was fading, as a result it was important to locate the casualty as quickly as possible. As the RNLI Lifeboat arrived on scene, they quickly spotted the 4 meter speedboat and it became apparent that the two people on board had managed to paddle their craft into safer water. They were taken under tow to Balbriggan harbour. Both the RNLI Lifeboat and the Coastguard Helicopter R116 returned to their stations.
