Skerries RNLI launched on Sunday 29th October to stand off the Skerries headland in view of the official opening ceremony of a local memorial monument. The monument is a memorial for people who have lost their lives at sea off Skerries and the neighbouring towns in years past. The President Mr. Michael D Higgins officially opened the event and Clogherhead ALB and Howth ALB stood off the headland with us. We then undertook a boat handling exercise with our flanking stations for the public to view from the shore. Following this Skerries lifeboat laid a wreath out to sea to close the ceremony.
Skerries RNLI along with Clogherhead RNLI and coast guard helicopter R116 carried out a search of an area off Gormanston last night (Tuesday 10 September) after reported sightings of distress flares in the area.
Skerries RNLI were tasked on 01 September 2013 to search for two missing divers. The divers were located on shore and medical assistance was provided until other emergency services could reach the scene. The casualty was then airlifted to Drogheda hospital to receive further treatment.
Skerries' Atlantic 85 launched shortly before 7pm to a call from a lone yachtsman who had run aground on a reef near Rush Harbour. 2 crew members were dropped off to assist the man in putting his anchor out for when the tide came in. The crew returned to station and the lifeboat launched again at 22:30 when there was more water. Crew transferred the salvage pump aboard the yacht in case there was damage to the hull when refloated. A line was attached to the vessel and once there was enough water, the lifeboat towed it off the reef. The yacht was then escorted to Skerries Harbour for the night. A crew member remained on board to assist the yachtsman on the return journey. Luckily there was only minor damage done to the yacht on inspection at low tide the next morning.
At 7pm on 20 June 2013, Skerries Atlantic 85 launched to a report of a 29ft motor vessel with engine difficulty between Lambay Island and Rogerstown estuary. The lifeboat located the stricken vessel, which was at anchor and towed it safely to Malahide Marina
